The archangel Michael: name, biblical sources and sanctuaries

The archangel Michael in tradition: the meaning of the name, Daniel, Jude and Revelation, the sword and the scales, the Gargano and the hilltop sanctuaries.

Of all the angels, Michael is the one who has left the deepest mark on the geography and imagination of Europe. Mountains, islands, castles and churches bear his name; his armed figure, with sword and scales, is recognisable even to those who know nothing of angelology. Yet the biblical sources that name him are few and brief. It is tradition, over the centuries, that made him the prince of the heavenly hosts.

The name as a question

In Hebrew Mi-ka-El means «Who is like God?». It is not a statement but a rhetorical question whose answer is implied: no one. That is why tradition saw in the name itself Michael's programme: he is the one who opposes every claim to be equal to God, and therefore the natural adversary of the rebel angel.

The biblical sources

Michael appears by name in only a few passages:

Text Michael's role
Daniel 10 «one of the chief princes», comes to the aid of the heavenly messenger
Daniel 12 the «great prince» who watches over the people at the time of the end
Letter of Jude the archangel who disputes with the devil over the body of Moses
Revelation 12 leads his angels in the war against the dragon

The episode in the Letter of Jude is curious: the archangel does not dare pronounce an insulting condemnation against the devil, but says only «The Lord rebuke you». Ancient tradition linked this account to an apocryphal writing about Moses that today survives only in part.

In non-canonical Jewish literature, such as the Book of Enoch, Michael is one of the chief angels who stand before God. In Islam too there is an angel named Mikail, mentioned in the Quran alongside Jibril.

The sword and the scales

Michael's iconography rests on two attributes.

The sword

It comes from Revelation: Michael fights the dragon and casts it down from heaven. This is the image that Raphael, Guido Reni and many others made famous, with the archangel trampling the demon. The combat has nothing furious about it: Michael is often depicted with a serene face, because victory does not depend on his strength but on what his name affirms.

The scales

They do not come from the Bible but from medieval tradition, which assigned to Michael the weighing of souls at the judgement, the so-called psychostasia. The image has ancient antecedents: in the Egyptian Book of the Dead the heart of the deceased is weighed against the feather of Maat. In the Last Judgements of Gothic cathedrals Michael holds the scales while a demon tries to tip the pan in its own favour.

The hilltop sanctuaries

A constant feature of Michael's cult is the choice of high places: mountain caves, peaks, rocky islands.

  • Monte Sant'Angelo, on the Gargano: according to tradition, the archangel appeared in a cave between the late fifth and early sixth century. The sanctuary became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations throughout the Middle Ages, and the cult spread widely among the Lombards.
  • Mont-Saint-Michel, in Normandy: tradition relates that at the beginning of the eighth century Michael appeared to the bishop of Avranches asking him to build a sanctuary on the islet.
  • The Sacra di San Michele, in the Susa Valley: an abbey perched on Mount Pirchiriano, at the gateway to the Alps.
  • Castel Sant'Angelo, in Rome: the name is linked to the legend according to which Pope Gregory the Great, during a procession against the plague, saw the archangel sheathing his sword on the top of the mausoleum.

The choice of heights has a clear symbolic meaning: Michael is the guardian of places where earth draws near to heaven. In modern times some have suggested that several of these sanctuaries lie along a «sacred line»; this is a recent notion, not an ancient tradition.

The feasts

In the Roman calendar the feast of Michael, together with Gabriel and Raphael, falls on 29 September. There was once also a feast on 8 May linked to the Gargano apparition. In the Orthodox Church the Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and the Bodiless Powers is celebrated on 8 November.

Michael as a symbol

In the esoteric reading Michael represents the force that discerns, that separates light from darkness within the human being. The question contained in his name is also an exercise in clarity: remembering that no part of oneself must take the place of the centre. At Studio Esoterico Cornelio this aspect is stressed: the trampled dragon is not only an external enemy, but the pride that every inner path must recognise.

In short

  • The name Mi-ka-El is a question: «Who is like God?».
  • Michael appears in Daniel, the Letter of Jude and Revelation as prince and leader of the heavenly hosts.
  • The sword comes from Revelation, the scales for weighing souls from medieval tradition.
  • His cult favours heights: the Gargano, Mont-Saint-Michel, the Sacra di San Michele, Castel Sant'Angelo.
  • Symbolically he represents the force that distinguishes light from darkness within.
