Netzach, Hod and Yesod: the lower triad of the Tree

Netzach, Hod and Yesod, the lower triad of the sefirot: endurance, form and foundation, with divine names, planetary correspondences and an inner reading.

Below Tiferet, the heart of the Tree of Life, a third triangle of sefirot takes shape. Netzach, Victory, on the right; Hod, Splendour, on the left; Yesod, Foundation, in the centre and below. This triad is the closest to the concrete world: here the higher forces take on the shape that will allow them to become manifest in Malkuth, the Kingdom.

Three triangles, three levels

To find your bearings it helps to recall the overall structure. The Tree, leaving out Malkuth, can be read as three stacked triangles:

Triad Sefirot Symbolic level
Supernal Kether, Chokmah, Binah intellect, origin
Moral or ethical Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet feeling, values
Natural or astral Netzach, Hod, Yesod instinct, image, action

The names of the triads vary between authors, but the principle is shared: one descends from the abstract to the concrete, from the idea to its realisation.

Netzach, Victory

Netzach, the seventh sefirah, stands on the pillar of Mercy, below Chesed. Its name means victory, but also eternity and endurance. It is not the victory of an instant, but that of one who keeps going over time.

It is the force that sustains long efforts, the desire that does not fade, the vital drive that keeps things moving. The associated biblical figure is Moses, who led the people for forty years in the desert. The divine Name is YHVH Tzevaot, «Lord of hosts».

In the Hermetic tradition Netzach corresponds to Venus and the colour green: the realm of feelings, art, attraction and the forces of nature.

Hod, Splendour

Hod, the eighth sefirah, stands on the pillar of Severity, below Gevurah. Its name means splendour, majesty, but also acknowledgement: the root is connected to the verb for giving thanks and for admitting.

Hod is the capacity to give form, to name, to organise. If Netzach is the force that pushes, Hod is the structure that channels it. The associated biblical figure is Aaron, Moses' brother, priest and spokesman: the one who translates into words and rites what Moses receives. The divine Name is Elohim Tzevaot, «God of hosts».

In the Hermetic tradition Hod corresponds to Mercury and the colour orange: practical intellect, language, writing, ceremonial magic as the ordering of symbols.

The pair Netzach and Hod

Netzach and Hod are often described as the two legs of the Tree, or the two pans of a scale. Netzach without Hod is energy without direction; Hod without Netzach is empty form, ritual without life.

A concrete example: anyone who plays an instrument needs drive and passion (Netzach) but also technique, theory and methodical practice (Hod). One without the other produces either a messy performance or a correct and cold one.

Yesod, Foundation

Yesod, the ninth sefirah, stands on the middle pillar, between Tiferet and Malkuth. It gathers all the energies of the higher sefirot and passes them on to the Kingdom. It is called Foundation on the basis of a verse in Proverbs: «the righteous is the foundation of the world».

This is why Yesod is associated with the figure of the Tzaddik, the righteous one, and with the patriarch Joseph, whom tradition calls «Joseph the righteous» for resisting temptation in the house of Potiphar. The divine Name is Shaddai or El Chai, «the living God».

Yesod is symbolically connected with generative power and with the covenant, and in the Kabbalistic reading its task is to ensure that the energy received from above is not scattered but reaches Malkuth intact.

Yesod and the Moon

In the Hermetic tradition Yesod corresponds to the Moon and the colour violet. Just as the Moon reflects the light of the Sun, Yesod reflects the light of Tiferet. It is the plane of images, dreams, imagination: the place where forces take shape before they become facts.

This association explains why many Hermetic authors regard Yesod as an ambivalent level: images can reveal, but they can also deceive. Work on Yesod consists in learning to tell creative imagination from mere daydreaming.

An observation exercise

To approach this triad you can keep a short diary for a week with three columns:

  1. Netzach: what gave me energy today, what did I strongly desire?
  2. Hod: what did I organise, clarify, put into words?
  3. Yesod: which images or dreams stayed in my mind?

Rereading the diary often shows which of the three functions is most present and which is neglected. It is the kind of work with which the Studio Esoterico Cornelio introduces the practical study of the lower sefirot.

In short

  • Netzach, Hod and Yesod form the lower triad, the closest to the concrete world.
  • Netzach is endurance and vital force, associated with Moses and Venus.
  • Hod is form and language, associated with Aaron and Mercury.
  • Yesod is the Foundation that gathers and transmits, associated with Joseph and the Moon.
  • Together they describe the passage from energy to image and from image to action.
